Is That a Hoodie or a Vape? How Teens Are Hiding Vaping Devices in Plain Sight

Sounds silly, right? If you think you know what a vape looks like, you may want to think again. Today's vaping products are not always the bulky, obvious devices they once were. Many are intentionally designed to blend in with the things teens already carry every day, making them nearly impossible for parents, teachers, and other caregivers to spot. On top of that, some teens are using vape liquid that contains THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

The good news is that awareness is one of the most powerful tools you have. Here is a closer look at how some of these devices are disguised and what you can do to start the conversation with your teen.

Vaping Hidden in Everyday Items

Vaping products designed to look like everyday items are not hard to find. They are actively marketed and sold online, often with young people in mind, and the variety is growing. Below are some of the most common disguised devices on the market.

1. Hoodies and Sweatshirts

A hoodie is about as normal as it gets in a teen's wardrobe, which is exactly why this one is so easy to miss. Vaping hoodies are designed with hollow drawstrings that double as a delivery system. A vaping device is tucked into a small internal pocket, and the user inhales through the end of the drawstring. The design even contains the vapor inside the tube, making it much harder to detect.

2. Backpacks

Some vaping backpacks include a hidden compartment for a vaping device with tubing that runs up through the shoulder strap. The mouthpiece sits right at the top of the strap, within easy reach without ever taking the bag off. It looks like any other backpack from the outside.

3. Phone Cases

Teens are rarely without their phones, and phone cases draw very little attention. Some cases are designed to hold a vaping cartridge and atomizer right alongside the phone, functioning as a usable vape with no additional device required. It looks completely normal sitting on a desk or in someone's hand.

4. Pens, Markers and Highlighters

These dual-function devices are designed to pass as a regular ballpoint pen or marker, complete with a working ink tip. Unscrewing the top reveals a cartridge slot for vaping. Sitting on a school desk, there is nothing about them that would raise a red flag.

5. Smartwatches

This one is extremely stealthy. A removable pod is hidden in the back of the device that can

be taken out and slipped back into place. They’re so advanced that they have an actual working digital display, making it easy to overlook.

6. Wireless Headphones

Many teens purchase wireless headphones for gaming, but this is yet another item that can be used to hide vaping devices. Instead of a microphone in this set of working headphones, the lookalike version conceals the vape.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, and companies come up with new products every day. Having an open, honest conversation with your teen is one of the best ways to discourage vaping.

Talking to Your Teen: Where to Start

Experts recommend staying calm and approaching the conversation with curiosity rather than accusation. Teens are more likely to engage when they feel they are learning something alongside a trusted adult rather than being lectured or scolded.

If you want to get ahead of the conversation, or have already discovered your teen has been vaping, here are a few ways to open the door:

  • Come informed. The more you know about what vaping is and how these devices work, the more credible and effective the conversation becomes. It also takes some of the allure away when teens realize their parents actually understand what they are doing.

  • Be honest about the risks. Young people respond to real information. Focus on what is actually known about the health effects rather than exaggerated claims.

  • Keep the conversation going. Don’t make it one big talk. Have multiple conversations instead. Making it a recurring, low-pressure topic keeps the lines of communication open over time.
